Welcome to Real Planning for Lancaster!

In a nutshell:

  • This site is about the proposed “canal corridor north” development site in Lancaster, north-west England.
  • Lancaster City Council’s initial plans for the site include a “cultural quarter”, some housing and designation for business units (see http://www.lancaster.gov.uk/council/planning/citycentre.htm).
  • In 2002, developers proposed plans for a large scale development on the site (there was talk of a large superstore, "big box", retail park, building a new road and car parking.). After these ideas were met with strong resistance by residence and others, all went quiet around the developers.

The Real Planning For Lancaster group aims to:

  • Undertake and encourage real public consultation regarding the future use of the site
  • Provide a forum for the development of a multi-agency people’s plan for the development of the site
  • Look into good practice (and good practitioners) for community-led development
  • Develop a planning application informed by a real consultation process Read more about the group

This website is designed to

  • be a gateway for all relevant information.
  • encourage you to contribute to the consultation process - let us know what you'd like to see on the site (and what you would not like to see). We will channel the public opinion and draw up a people's plan!

The area we're talking about: (this map shows Chelverton-Carillion's plans for development and road - we're interested in the same area, which is shaded.)
